How to set up a soundboard for Discord
Discord soundboards explained
A Discord soundboard lets you play sound effects during voice calls — meme sounds, reaction clips, music stingers, and custom audio. When you trigger a sound, everyone in the voice channel hears it through your microphone, as if you are playing it out loud. The best soundboards integrate with a voice changer, letting you combine voice effects with sound effects for maximum entertainment.
Discord added built-in soundboard features in 2023, but they are limited to Nitro subscribers, have a small sound library, and cannot combine with voice changers. Third-party soundboard apps like Echo offer unlimited custom sounds, hotkey triggers, and seamless integration with AI voice effects — all for free.
Setting up Echo's soundboard with Discord
Step 1: Download Echo from voicechanger.live/download. The soundboard feature is built in — no separate app or plugin needed.
Step 2: Open the Soundboard panel in Echo. You will see a grid of sound slots. Drag any audio file (MP3, WAV, OGG) onto a slot to add it. Each slot can be assigned a keyboard hotkey for instant triggering during calls.
Step 3: In Discord, go to Settings → Voice & Video → Input Device. Select the Echo virtual microphone ("CABLE Input" or "Echo Virtual Audio"). This routes both your voice (with any voice effects enabled) and your soundboard audio through the same microphone input.
Step 4: Test by joining a voice channel and pressing your soundboard hotkeys. Your friends will hear the sounds played through your microphone. You can trigger sounds while talking — the audio mixes automatically.
Building your sound library
Reaction sounds: Classic sound effects for reacting to moments — air horn, sad trombone, drum rimshot, cricket chirps, and applause. These are the bread and butter of any soundboard.
Meme sounds: Iconic internet audio clips — "bruh," "among us," vine boom, and whatever is trending this week. Update your library regularly to stay current.
Music stingers: Short musical clips for dramatic moments — boss fight music, victory fanfare, horror strings. Great for tabletop RPG sessions over Discord.
Custom recordings: Record your own sounds directly in Echo. This is perfect for inside jokes, custom intros, and personalized reactions that only your friend group will understand.
File formats: Echo supports MP3, WAV, OGG, and FLAC. Keep files short (1-5 seconds) for reaction sounds and up to 30 seconds for music stingers. Longer files work but are less practical as reaction triggers.
Combining soundboard with voice changer
The real power of Echo is combining the soundboard with AI voice effects. Enable a voice effect (like Deep Male or Anime Girl) while using the soundboard — your voice stays transformed between sound effects, creating a complete character experience.
Use case: You are running a D&D session over Discord. Enable the Deep Male voice for your villain NPC, trigger dramatic music stingers for boss encounters, and play ambient cave sounds during dungeon exploration — all from a single app with hotkeys.
The soundboard audio passes through the same virtual microphone as your voice, so Discord treats everything as a single audio source. No complicated audio routing or mixer setup required.
